DESTINATION GUIDES
Practical reads on transport, stays and experiences before you go.
The first rule for accommodation in Western Sichuan is to follow the altitude, not the star rating. Kangding, Xinduqiao, Danba, Rilong and Daocheng each involve trade-offs; this guide explains which night belongs where, the difference between village guesthouses and county hotels, and seasonal booking lead times and facilities to confirm.
From Taiwan to Western Sichuan, the usual route is to fly into Chengdu and continue west overland. This guide covers direct and connecting options from Taipei and Kaohsiung, how Taiwanese and mainland booking platforms divide the work, the Taiwan Compatriot Permit and name matching, and the three ways to reach Western Sichuan after landing in Chengdu.
The hard part of a first self-drive in Western Sichuan is not navigation but the sudden weather at passes like Zheduo, the endless curves and lorries on the national roads, and how a car behaves at altitude with less power. This guide covers what to watch before setting off, while driving, and when something goes wrong.
Route planning and car services in Western Sichuan all look alike; the difference lies in whether the driver knows highland roads, whether the quote includes fuel and tolls, and whether a contract protects you if something goes wrong. This guide covers when professional help is worth paying for, how to compare quotes and what to put in writing.
There is no single best month for Western Sichuan; it depends on what you want: mountain azaleas and greening grassland in May and June, the greenest grassland plus the rainy season in July and August, autumn colour from mid-September to late October, and snow with icy roads from November to March. This guide sets out the month-by-month trade-offs, plus booking and road reminders for each season.
Western Sichuan's list of sights is long, and the real question is not where to go but what to cut when time runs short. This guide sorts the scenery into snow mountains, grasslands, lakes, Tibetan villages and gorges, gives a priority list, and explains what is on the way and what needs a detour, plus the altitude-acclimatisation time you must allow.
