For southerners who want to ski close to home, Xiling Snow Mountain, Mount Emei and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain are the three names that come up. This guide compares their elevations, terrain, the skiers they suit and the altitude risks, and sets out how to pace a trip from Chengdu or Lijiang.
When southerners think about skiing, the reflex is to fly north. In fact there are ski areas around Chengdu and Lijiang, with shorter journeys and lower costs, that suit a first taste with children or a weekend. What these places share is high elevation and low temperatures, while their terrain and snow quality differ clearly from the north. Before you go, work out what each one actually offers; that is more useful than arguing about which is best.
Here is the short answer. Around Chengdu, for a day trip or one night, choose Xiling Snow Mountain, which has the most complete terrain and the most mature facilities. Mount Emei fits if you are going anyway, and the skiing at Leidongping can be an add-on rather than a reason for the trip. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain's ski area sits very high and its appeal is the glacier scenery and the experience of thin air, but altitude sickness is a real risk, so it is a poor first stop for learning to ski and not advisable with children or older parents. On snow quality and terrain, all three trail the big northern resorts, but for a first time on snow or a weekend of play with children, they are enough.
This guide was compiled in September 2026, ahead of the 2026-2027 season. Elevations, lift operations, open runs and pass prices may change, so confirm with the scenic area's official announcement before departure.
Who should go to Xiling Snow Mountain?
Xiling Snow Mountain is in Dayi County, Chengdu, about 110 km from the city and roughly 2.5 hours by road, and it is one of the earlier ski destinations developed in southwest China. The highest peak, Daxuetang, tops 5,000 m, while the ski area sits on the rear slope at about 2,100 to 2,400 m, with natural snowfall supplemented by snowmaking in winter. In 2025-2026 the rear-slope ski area opened on 27 November and closed on 16 March, with skiing suspended from 17 March, and the season length depends largely on that year's temperatures.
Its strength is complete facilities: lifts, gear rental, lessons and dining all sit inside one scenic area, and you can day-trip from Chengdu or stay one night on the mountain. Terrain is mostly beginner and intermediate, which suits first-time skiers and parents teaching children. The downside is queueing at weekends in peak season, when lifts and the rental hall can each cost you one or two hours, so start early if you want a smooth day.
If you only have one day, leave Chengdu before seven in the morning, head up in the morning, ski in the afternoon and come down in the evening. For a more relaxed pace, one night is better: the next morning is quieter and the snow holds up better.

Is Mount Emei's ski area worth a special trip?
There is a small ski area around Leidongping inside the Mount Emei scenic area, at roughly 2,400 m. It is limited in size, the runs are more for a taste of skiing than for training, and there is no long advanced descent. It works best as something to add on a Mount Emei visit rather than a reason to travel, and whether it opens depends directly on weather on the mountain and access conditions in the scenic area.
When it is worth it: if you were already going up Mount Emei for the Golden Summit and the hot springs, adding half a day of skiing makes the trip fuller. When it is not: if you are setting aside two or three days purely for skiing, give that time to Xiling Snow Mountain instead. Roads around Leidongping often ice over in winter and access is weather-dependent, so check the scenic area's access notices in advance.
With children, note that altitude and cold combine here. Keep play sessions short and go back indoors to warm up regularly.
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain: how do you weigh skiing against altitude?
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is in Lijiang, and its ski area sits on the eastern slope, about 20 km from Lijiang Old Town. One point is easily confused: the upper station of the Glacier Park cable car is at about 4,506 m, but that is a viewing platform figure, not the height of the ski area. Public sources disagree about the ski area itself, with one line putting its average elevation at about 3,100 m and another describing runs of about 3,000 m in total, a maximum pitch of about 26 degrees and a season that can run into June. Before booking, be clear that Glacier Park sightseeing and skiing are two different things, and confirm with the scenic area where the ski operation is that year and whether it is open.
The problem is the altitude. Oxygen is thin, temperatures are low and the wind picks up, so skiing costs you more energy than at a resort on the plains, and altitude sickness will not skip you just because you are only skiing half a day. People with heart or lung conditions, unstable blood pressure, or who have just arrived at altitude and are not acclimatised should not take part. Take extra care with children and older parents.
If you do want the experience, build in enough time to acclimatise: rest in Lijiang for a day or two first, confirm you feel well, then plan a short session of skiing or snow play without chasing distance, and be ready to come down at any point. For a first contact with skiing, a resort on lower ground is the steadier place to learn the basics.

From Chengdu or Lijiang: how many days?
From Chengdu there are two rhythms. Two days and one night is the most comfortable: leave on the morning of day one, reach the scenic area around midday, play in the snow or take a beginner lesson in the afternoon, sleep on the mountain, then ski on the morning of day two before coming down. For a day trip, cut it to an afternoon of experience and do not expect to learn technique.
Lijiang needs an extra day for acclimatisation. Keep the arrival day quiet, go up Jade Dragon Snow Mountain on day two with skiing or snow play limited to half a day, and leave the old town and surroundings for day three. Scheduling skiing on the day you arrive is the plan most likely to go wrong.
To combine this with other travel in Sichuan or Yunnan, see the site's Sichuan destination page and Yunnan destination page, or look at the six-day western Sichuan loop and eight-day Kunming, Dali, Lijiang and Xishuangbanna itinerary. Both itineraries already account for altitude acclimatisation and transport connections.
Pre-Departure Checklist
Confirm each of these before departure. Opening hours at the scenic area and lift operating times. Whether the ski area has opened and which runs are available. Whether the pass includes gear, a helmet and lockers. Whether beginner lessons need booking. Travel time from your lodging to the ski hall and how long the queues run. The day's weather, road ice and any visitor limits at the scenic area.
Altitude preparation deserves its own list. Find out about your companions' health in advance and do not conceal heart, lung or blood pressure problems. Limit time outdoors and head down immediately if headache, nausea or a racing heart appears. Dress warmly, with a hat, gloves and goggles all essential. Carry water and something for energy. The safety floor is the same as anywhere: wear a helmet, only ski runs that match your level, and confirm before departure that your insurance covers rescue and medical care.
Data sources and review notes
The elevations, season dates and terrain data quoted above are compiled from scenic area websites, local culture and tourism notices, scenic area announcements and published ticketing information. The review date is 21 September 2026. The closing date for Xiling Snow Mountain's 2025-2026 season comes from a public scenic area notice. The ski facilities at Mount Emei and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain are small, their opening depends on weather and operational decisions, and public data is patchy, so this guide writes only what can be verified and does not speculate. On price, all three scenic areas charge admission, lifts and skiing separately; prices, opening hours and open runs for the 2026-2027 season are subject to each scenic area's latest official announcement.
Work out whether you want an experience or practice
These southwest ski areas differ a lot in purpose. Xiling Snow Mountain is somewhere you can genuinely work on the basics, with complete facilities and easy access in and out. Mount Emei's ski area is a bonus on the way. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is an experience inside a high-altitude landscape, not a training ground. Comparing all three as if they were the same thing leads to the wrong conclusion.
Building altitude acclimatisation into the itinerary is the step most often skipped at these resorts. Many people treat Xiling Snow Mountain and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain as the same experience, but the first lets you work on technique at ease, while the second is closer to a trip up to 4,000 m to look at a glacier. Decide whether you want to learn to ski or to see snow scenery, and the choice stops being difficult.
If you are travelling with children or older parents, put Xiling Snow Mountain first. If the trip to Lijiang was always about the snow mountain scenery, half a day of experience is reasonable, but put acclimatisation ahead of it. If you want a southwest ski trip arranged around your group size, days and fitness, or need to confirm a scenic area's conditions for the season, reach us through Contact Us to talk with a 0765trip travel advisor. Ski areas in Sichuan are especially crowded around Spring Festival, when queues for lifts and rental gear run much longer than usual, so with children it is best to avoid those days or book lodging on the mountain in advance and compress the queueing into the previous day. For 2026-2027 opening hours, lift operations and pass prices, please refer to each scenic area's latest official announcement.
