DESTINATION GUIDES
Practical reads on transport, stays and experiences before you go.
The Qinghai–Gansu grand loop has no single best month: the Danxia depends on light, the salt lakes on clear skies, Qinghai Lake on rape flowers, and Mogao on reservations. This guide breaks each sight's timeline down by the four seasons to help you decide which month to leave.
Gannan's four seasons are four different landscapes: green grasslands in high summer, golden river bends in autumn, and the Buddha-unveiling festival in winter. This guide breaks down the core sights — Zhagana, the Ruoergai (Zoigê) grassland and the First Bend of the Yellow River — along a timeline to help you decide which month to go.
