Tour overview
Understand the pace, service and fit before diving into the itinerary.
A classic grand loop stringing together the most iconic scenery of Gansu and Qinghai: from Lanzhou, cross the Qilian grasslands to the Rainbow Danxia in Zhangye, then walk through Jiayuguan, the Mogao Caves and Singing Sand Dunes & Crescent Moon Spring to feel the legacy of the Silk Road; dive deeper into the Gobi to see the Child of the Earth, Heidushan and Emerald Lake, experience the Mirror of the Sky at Chaka Salt Lake and take in the magnificent Qinghai Lake along its lakeshore road; finally enjoy Tibetan nomadic life at Wenjia Ranch and visit the Atomic City and Wang Luobin Music & Art Museum. Groups of 8+ are upgraded to 2+1 first-class coaches; the package includes four 3-star and two 4-star hotel nights plus one characteristic hotel night along Qinghai Lake, featuring the Zhangye Snack Feast, Grand Pass Banquet, Dunhuang Dream Banquet and Qinghai hotpot. All first-admission tickets are included — ideal for first-time Northwest travellers and photography lovers.
The Gansu–Qinghai grand loop is many people's "must drive once in a lifetime" route. It packs the vast grandeur of the Hexi Corridor and the clear openness of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau into a single journey: on one side the rainbow mountains of Zhangye's Danxia, the thousand-year murals of Mogao and the camel bells of Mingsha Mountain; on the other the green of Emerald Lake, the mirror of the sky at Chaka Salt Lake and the ten-thousand-hectare blue waves of Qinghai Lake. In eight days out of Lanzhou you head west and double back, with scenery so dense it dazzles — clouds of cattle and sheep over the Qilian grassland, rape-flower seas mirroring snow peaks below Daban Mountain; deep in the Gobi the Child of the Earth lies quietly prone, the ink-wash rock faces of Heidushan look like a heaven-made scroll, and when you stand at the centre of Chaka Salt Lake with water and sky merging at your feet, that moment of stillness washes away all the dust of the road.
This route's fascination lies in the alternation of history and nature: in the morning you're still looking up at the flying-apsara ribbons inside the Mogao caves, and by dusk you're riding a camel into the Mingsha Mountain sunset; yesterday you were picturing beacon fires beneath the Han Great Wall, today you're watching the stars rise over Qinghai Lake. The whole trip upgrades to 2+1 land first-class seats with 8 or more guests, stays in four nights of three-diamond and two nights of four-diamond hotels plus a signature stay along Qinghai Lake, and includes signature meals such as the Zhangye snack banquet, the Grand Pass Banquet, the Great Dunhuang Dream banquet and Qinghai clay-pot lamb, with all first-entry scenic tickets included. A thousand kilometres of span holds all the vastness and depth of the great northwest.
Who is this route for?
It suits first-time travellers to the great northwest who want to see the best of the Silk Road and the lakes in one go, travellers who love history and culture, and families happy to accept long drives. Hotels start at three-diamond throughout, with signature accommodation along Qinghai Lake and several signature banquet meals, balancing comfort with local experience. One note: driving is long on this route, and the Qinghai stretch sits at about 3,000 metres — travellers with heart or blood-vessel conditions or limited mobility are not recommended to join; salt-lake photo spots like Chaka and Emerald Lake take some legwork, so when travelling with seniors, slow the pace and go at their ability.
What should you note before departure?
Temperatures swing sharply between day and night in the Northwest — bring a windproof jacket, light down coat, sunscreen, sunglasses and a sun hat.
Drives are long and some areas are basic — pack motion-sickness tablets, cold and stomach remedies, and high-energy snacks.
The Qinghai section is high altitude — sleep well and avoid strenuous exercise for a week beforehand; Rhodiola or similar altitude remedies are recommended.
For photos at Chaka Salt Lake, wear a bright long dress and bring your own shoe covers or slippers; don't step into the dissolution holes in the lake. The glare off the surface is strong — sunscreen is essential.
At heritage sites such as the Mogao Caves, follow the visiting rules, do not photograph inside the caves, and help protect the relics.
Mogao tickets must be booked in advance; the default is the B ticket (4 caves). If tickets run out or weather interferes, substitute arrangements are made — that's normal.
How the eight days unfold: the Silk Road and the lakes in turn
Day 1 — Guangzhou–Lanzhou/Xining: Private-car airport pickup and check-in; in the evening you can visit Zhengning Road Night Market in Lanzhou for beef noodles and milk-egg fermented-rice drink.
Day 2 — Qilian grassland and Rainbow Danxia: Cross the Qilian grassland and see the rape-flower sea at Daban Mountain (depending on the season); in the afternoon tour Zhangye's Rainbow Danxia and in the evening watch the Return to Zhangye song-and-dance show.
Day 3 — Jiayuguan and Gobi landmarks: View the Jiayuguan Fortress from outside, enjoy the Grand Pass Banquet for lunch, and in the afternoon stop at Guazhou's Child of the Earth, the Mirage and the Emperor Wu of Han sculpture.
Day 4 — Dunhuang's Mogao Grottoes and Mingsha Mountain: Visit the Mogao Grottoes in the morning; in the afternoon ride camels at Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake and watch the sun set over the sea of sand.
Day 5 — Gobi and Emerald Lake: Pass Heidushan and Dangjin Mountain, see the Nanbaxian Yardang landforms, and in the afternoon watch the "shattered green gemstones" of Emerald Lake in Dachaidan.
Day 6 — Chaka Salt Lake and Qinghai Lake: Shoot reflections on the "mirror of the sky" in the morning; in the evening follow the lakeside ring road to Heimahe to view Qinghai Lake.
Day 7 — Wenjia Ranch and the Atomic City: Experience the grassland nomadic carnival and a Tibetan tea session, visit the Wang Luobin Music and Art Museum and the Atomic City, and overnight in Xining/Lanzhou.
Day 8 — Return: Transfer to the airport according to flight time and return to Guangzhou.
What's included in the cost, and what's extra?
Included: return economy flights from Guangzhou to Lanzhou, seven nights' stay with next-morning breakfast, first-entry tickets to all listed scenic areas, 7 breakfasts and 6 main meals (including signature dishes) and certified Mandarin-speaking guide service. Not included: construction and fuel fees, travel accident insurance, scenic-area shuttle buses and paid recreation (such as camel riding at Mingsha Mountain or the salt-lake trains), and personal spending — single-room supplement separate; budget about 600–1,000 yuan for incidentals. Some northwest hotels have limited conditions, with no air conditioning or timed hot water — common across the region. Before departure, confirm the season's ticket reservations and salt-lake opening information with your advisor, subject to the latest official announcements.
Closing words: pack the vastness of the great northwest into eight days
On the last night, standing by Qinghai Lake, you'll think of every colour you've passed on the way: the red and yellow of the Danxia, the green of Emerald Lake, the white of the salt lakes, the blue of Qinghai Lake, and the cinnabar and azurite settled for a thousand years in the Mogao murals. The vastness of Gansu and Qinghai can't be reached by imagination alone — it has to be measured inch by inch by wheels and feet. The end of this route is often not the end of the journey but the beginning of re-knowing western China.
For first-timers to the great northwest, the most important mental preparation is "the drive itself is the scenery": the gaps between stops often run hundreds of kilometres, but it's precisely those hours crossing the Gobi and grassland that unfold the Silk Road and the plateau before your eyes bit by bit. As the plane lifts off from Lanzhou and the Qilian snow peaks recede, you'll understand: some scenery is worth thousands of kilometres of travel to meet, and some stories can only be understood by walking them yourself. If you'd like to fit this grand loop into your holiday but aren't sure about the season, Mogao reservations or salt-lake opening times, tell a 0765trip travel advisor your travel month and group size, and we'll confirm a plan for that season.

IS THIS TOUR FOR ME?
Is this tour right for me?
Prevent altitude sickness in advance
The Qinghai section sits at around 3,000 m. Slow your pace, avoid strenuous exercise and carry altitude remedies if you wish. Avoid showering right after arrival at high altitude, and tell your guide at once if you feel unwell.
Mogao Caves tickets must be reserved in advance
Mogao Caves reservations open 30 days in advance; Ticket B costs ¥100/person. If tickets sell out or weather intervenes, the Western Thousand Buddha Caves and Dunhuang Museum will be substituted, or a refund will be issued per scenic-area rules.
Long drives and big temperature swings in the Northwest
Day-night temperature differences are extreme, with mornings and evenings near 0°C — bring a windproof jacket and a light down coat. Drives between sights are long, so pack some high-energy snacks.
Stay safe when photographing the salt lake
The salt crust is rough — wear shoe covers or slippers when entering the lake. There are sinkholes beneath, so don't go too deep. On sunny days the UV plus lake reflection is intense: apply sunscreen and wear sunglasses.

Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to visit Chaka Salt Lake?+
Calm, sunny days give the best photos — around 9 am and 5 pm, when the light is soft and reflections are crisp. A solid-colour bright dress with a red scarf photographs beautifully.
What is the difference between Mogao Caves Ticket A and Ticket B?+
This product defaults to Ticket B (¥100/person), covering 4 caves. If Ticket A is issued (8 caves plus digital cinema), a supplement of ¥138/person applies.
Will I get altitude sickness on this trip?+
The Qinghai section is about 2,800–3,000 m; most people acclimatise within 1–2 days. Sleep well and avoid catching a cold before departure, and you may consult a doctor about medicines such as Rhodiola.
Is the shuttle bus inside the scenic areas compulsory?+
No. Shuttles at Rainbow Danxia, Emerald Lake, Chaka Salt Lake and similar sites are optional — walk or choose electric carts and small trains according to your energy.
