Yabuli, Beidahu, Songhua Lake, Changbai Mountain and Tonghua each suit different skiers. This guide compares the five by skill level, days available and access, and sets out what works for beginners, advanced skiers and families.
If you want somewhere in China where you can ski for several days in a row, Northeast China is usually the first stop. Resorts here were built early and their support facilities are solid: Harbin and Changchun have airports and high-speed rail lines running close to the slopes, and most travelers from the Pearl River Delta can arrive the same day. Plenty of names sit on the map, but only three things really decide the trip. Your skill level, how many days you can take off, and whether you are willing to move between the resort and the city.
Here is the short answer. If you are skiing for the first time, or traveling with children, look first at Vanke Songhua Lake and Changbai Mountain International Resort in Jilin. Songhua Lake is close to Jilin City and its runs are clearly graded; Changbai Mountain adds hot springs and a snow park, so the non-skiers in your group have something to do. If you can already hold an intermediate run and want vertical drop and long descents, focus on Beidahu. To combine city ice festivals with skiing in one trip, Yabuli is easier, with a high-speed train from Harbin to Yabuli West taking a little over an hour. If you only have two or three days, do not overreach. Skiing one resort properly beats ticking off three.
This guide was compiled in September 2026, ahead of the 2026-2027 season. Opening and closing dates, open runs, lift operations, and pass and lesson prices change every year, so confirm with each resort's official announcement before departure.
Which Northeast resorts suit which skiers?
Skiing in the Northeast is concentrated in Heilongjiang and Jilin. Heilongjiang has Yabuli; Jilin has Beidahu, Vanke Songhua Lake, Changbai Mountain International Resort and Wanfeng Tonghua. The seasons run roughly in step: resorts start opening in late November and operate through late February or early March, then close runs one by one as the weather turns. What separates them is scale and location.
Yabuli sits in Shangzhi, Harbin, Heilongjiang, about 198 km from downtown Harbin. After the three mountains were linked for the 2025-2026 season it has 55 runs totaling about 88.8 km, the longest single run at 5 km, a maximum vertical drop of 910 m and 2.25 million sq m of snowmaking. The 2025-2026 season opened on 7 November and runs for nearly five months. It suits first-time skiers who also want to see Harbin, at the cost of staying at the resort or in Yabuli town.
Beidahu is in Yongji County, Jilin City, 53 km from downtown Jilin and 126 km from Changchun Longjia Airport. It has 64 runs totaling 72 km, 239 hectares of skiable area, a maximum vertical drop of 870 m and a main peak, Nanlou Mountain, at 1,404.8 m. Snow cover lasts about 160 days and can extend into late April. Vertical drop and steep pitches are the draw, and it suits skiers who can already handle intermediate runs.
Vanke Songhua Lake is in Fengman District, Jilin City. Its main peak, Daqing Mountain, stands at 935 m. There are 28 runs and about 1.51 million sq m of skiable area, with a maximum vertical drop around 600 m; sources give 605 m to 671 m depending on the year. The 2025-2026 season opened in mid-November. It is built around families and resort holidays, so peak-season room rates are high and you should book early.
Changbai Mountain International Resort is in Songjianghe, Fusong County, Baishan, Jilin. Official material says more than 30 runs; third-party sources give 43 runs, 30 km of trails and a 387 m vertical drop. The operator states the season runs from mid-November to early April. It suits families who want things to do off the snow, though most trips from southern China involve a connection.
Wanfeng Tonghua is in Jinchang, Dongchang District, Tonghua, Jilin. It grew out of the Tonghua ski area built in 1959 and reopened as a new resort on 18 December 2021. Its official figures are 34 runs, an elevation of 960 m, an effective vertical drop of 560 m, 26 km of trails, a longest run of 4.8 km and a maximum pitch of 38 degrees. It suits people who want to avoid the crowds. Flights are limited, so most visitors connect through Changchun or Shenyang and continue by rail and road.
Run these five against your own group and priorities and most of the indecision disappears. The head-to-head comparisons are the part worth spelling out.
Pass prices differ just as much. Yabuli Sunshine Resort's 2025-2026 beginner-area pass, gear included and valid for three hours, starts at CNY 138. The four-hour three-mountain pass starts at CNY 360 and the eight-hour high-altitude three-mountain pass at CNY 370. Beidahu prices day passes by weekday, weekend and public holiday. Songhua Lake starts at CNY 280 for a weekday full-day pass and CNY 380 at weekends and on holidays. Wanfeng Tonghua charges roughly CNY 150 to 200 on weekdays and CNY 200 to 300 at weekends. Whether gear, lifts and day or night sessions are included swings the price a lot, so compare like for like.

Yabuli or Beidahu?
The two are often compared, but they are built for different people.
Yabuli lies southeast of Harbin and is one of China's earliest large-scale ski resorts. Runs span beginner to advanced, with separate teaching areas and rental outlets. For a first-time skier the appeal is how smooth the process is: instructors, protective gear and beginner slopes are all in place, so you are not working things out alone. The trade-off is distance, about 200 km from downtown Harbin, which makes a day trip rushed. Most people stay at the resort or in Yabuli town, so sort out the shuttle between your hotel and the ski hall before you go.
Beidahu is about vertical drop. Its runs are longer and steeper, with a high proportion of intermediate and advanced terrain, which suits skiers who can already control speed and turn and want to work on technique. Going to Beidahu for a first ski trip usually means circling the beginner area all day, which wastes what the resort offers and makes it easy to get hurt by overestimating yourself. If grandparents are coming along, note that there is not much to do around the resort besides skiing.
Treat Yabuli as the gateway for a first trip and a city-and-snow combination, and Beidahu as the training ground for improving skiers. Put side by side, the choice becomes clear.
Songhua Lake, Changbai Mountain or Tonghua: what do you give up?
Vanke Songhua Lake is close to Jilin City, with lodging, dining and ski services concentrated inside the resort, clearly graded runs, and beginner terrain and teaching resources that work well for people starting from zero. Its weakness is popularity in peak season. Rooms and passes need booking early, and late bookings often leave only expensive rooms.
Changbai Mountain International Resort is in Songjianghe, Fusong County, with the ski area joined to a resort town and hot springs, snow tubing and ice activities beyond skiing. Of the three it is the best fit for a whole family, but access is constrained. From the south most trips connect through Beijing, Shanghai or Shenyang to Changbai Mountain Airport, or fly to Changchun and continue by rail and road. If you are skiing for two or three days, budget that half-day transfer into both your money and your time.
Wanfeng Tonghua's defining quality is quiet. It builds on Tonghua's early skiing heritage, the runs are adequate and the crowds are smaller than at the other resorts, which suits people who do not want to spend the day queueing for lifts. Transport is the weak point: flights to Tonghua are limited, so most visitors connect through Changchun or Shenyang and then drive into the mountains.

Coming from the Pearl River Delta: how many days?
With skiing, time on snow matters more than the resort's reputation. Three days is the floor; five is comfortable.
Three days works if you stay put. Arrive and collect gear on day one, take a beginner lesson, ski a full day on day two, then ski a half day on the morning of day three before heading home. Songhua Lake and Changbai Mountain are the smoothest, with clear airport and rail connections. Yabuli works too, as long as you accept the drive between Harbin and the resort.
Five days is enough for two resorts. Ski three days at Songhua Lake to build a base, then move to Beidahu or Changbai Mountain for different terrain. The transfer day is mostly travel, so treat it as rest. Beidahu and Songhua Lake are both around Jilin City and the easiest pair to combine. Changbai Mountain and Tonghua sit in eastern Jilin and take the better part of a day from Jilin City.
Whichever length you choose, keep your departure day for travel only. Do not bolt a final morning on the slopes onto a flight, because winter roads and flights in the Northeast are not reliable enough. If you also want Snow Town and rime ice, you can follow the site's Harbin to Snow Town and Changbai Mountain loop guide to sequence the trip.
Pre-Departure Checklist
Once you have chosen a resort, confirm each of these before departure. Whether your dates fall after the opening date, and which runs and lifts are open that day. Whether beginner lessons need booking, and whether the instructor teaches skiing or snowboarding. Whether the pass includes gear, a helmet and lockers. How you get from your lodging to the ski hall and when the first and last shuttles run. Airline or rail baggage rules if you bring your own gear. Local weather warnings and any temporary resort closures.
Three safety points to add. Wear a helmet, and rent hip and knee pads while you are learning. Only ski runs that match your level. Confirm before departure that your insurance covers ski-related rescue and medical care. For how to rent gear, slope etiquette and what to practise first, the site's first-time skiing preparation guide goes into more detail and pairs well with this one.
Data sources and review notes
The run counts, vertical drops, elevations, season dates and prices quoted above are compiled from resort websites, public material from local culture, tourism and sports authorities, and ticketing information published during the 2025-2026 season. The review date is 21 September 2026. Some resorts report different run counts and drops in different years and through different channels, and this guide prefers official or officially republished sources. Opening and closing dates, open runs, lift operations, pass prices and discounts for the 2026-2027 season are subject to each resort's latest official announcement.
Choosing a resort starts with your level, not its reputation
The right Northeast resort depends on who you are, not on which name is loudest. For beginners and families, Songhua Lake and Changbai Mountain are more forgiving. To add city ice festivals, Yabuli is simplest. If you can already ski intermediate runs, Beidahu's vertical drop is what you are paying for. And if you would rather not queue and can spare half a day on the road, Tonghua is the quiet option. Northeast versus Xinjiang is a separate question, and the site's where to ski in China guide compares them point by point, so we will not repeat it here.
What really shapes the trip is preparation. Whether your lodging is somewhere a shuttle can reach, whether lessons are booked, and whether you have left a buffer before flying home. Get those three right and the rest is down to snow and weather. One more reminder: skiing is physical, so do not pack day one too tightly. Give yourself half a day to adjust to the cold and your gear and you will ski better on day two. If family members are not skiing, check in advance that the resort has a warm lounge and food, so they are not waiting in the wind all day.
