Chongli ski resorts compared: Wanlong, Genting and ThaiwooTravel in China
Summary

Chongli's resorts sit close together, and picking the wrong one costs you half a day in transit. This guide compares Wanlong, Genting, Thaiwoo, Fulong, Dolomiti and Changchengling by terrain, who they suit and where to stay, and explains how to reach Chongli by high-speed rail or by car.

Chongli is the densest concentration of skiing in North China. Six or seven resorts are packed into one district, mostly within twenty minutes of each other by car, and less than an hour from Beijing by high-speed rail. The upside is choice and short transfers. The catch is the same thing: the resorts differ a lot in character, and if you book the wrong base or the wrong pass, half your day goes into shuttles and queues.

Here is the short answer. For a first ski trip, or with children or older parents, choose Thaiwoo or Fulong, where lodging, dining and beginner lessons sit in one place and you do not have to travel after skiing. If you can already hold an intermediate run and want vertical drop and soft snow, look at Wanlong and Genting, whose intermediate and advanced terrain is what Chongli is known for. If you are watching your budget and just want two easy days, Dolomiti and Changchengling fit better. No resort is simply better than another. Confirm your own level and who is coming with you first, then pick the base area. The resorts are close, but switching between them wastes time rather than saving money, so lock your lodging and pass into one area.

This guide was compiled in September 2026, ahead of the 2026-2027 season. Opening and closing dates, open runs, lift and night-skiing operations, and pass and room prices change every year, so confirm with each resort's official announcement before departure.

Which Chongli resorts suit which skiers?

Chongli sits in Zhangjiakou, Hebei. Its elevation and latitude give it a longer season than central Beijing, generally opening in mid-November and running into March. Some snow events of the 2022 Winter Olympics were held here: Genting Snow Park hosted freestyle skiing and snowboarding, and the Guyangshu cluster includes the National Ski Jumping Centre. The runs and lifts left behind by those events are still the main draw for stronger skiers in Chongli.

  • Wanlong: 32 runs totaling about 47 km, a high point of 2,110 m, vertical drop of about 550 m and close to 60 percent advanced terrain. In 2025-2026 it opened on 21 October and closed on 7 April, the longest season in Chongli. The terrain is on the demanding side, which suits improving skiers who want drop and long descents, while the space for beginners is limited.

  • Genting: 32 runs totaling about 28 km and a high point of 2,104 m. The park also holds seven Olympic competition venues including a halfpipe and slopestyle course, most of them closed to the public. In 2025-2026 it opened on 1 November and closed on 28 March. The grading is complete from beginner to advanced, with advanced terrain dominating, and popular lifts queue in peak season.

  • Thaiwoo: 22 runs totaling about 16 km, with Yushiliang, the main peak, at 2,160 m and an absolute vertical drop of 510 m. In 2025-2026 it opened on 7 November and closed on 23 March. It is an alpine-style town that suits families, beginners and non-skiing companions, and room rates are high in peak season.

  • Fulong: 33 runs totaling about 25 km, maximum vertical drop around 482 m, about five minutes on foot from Chongli town. In 2025-2026 it opened on 1 November and closed on 23 March. Snow-play areas and night skiing are the draw, and it suits beginners and families with children, though it is smaller than Wanlong and Genting.

  • Dolomiti: 9 runs totaling about 8 km. In 2025-2026 it opened only on 31 December and closed on 9 March, the shortest season in Chongli. It takes the value-for-money route and suits leisure skiers on a budget who only want two days.

  • Changchengling: 4 runs totaling about 3 km, a high point of roughly 2,100 m and a vertical drop of 380 m, according to Hebei Provincial Sports Bureau material. It is an older resort with simple terrain, suited to first-timers and short visits.

  • Cuiyunshan Galaxy: 12 runs totaling about 7 km. In 2025-2026 it opened on 1 November and closed on 23 March, and it suits people who want to pair skiing with a forest holiday on Cuiyun Mountain.

The comparisons worth spelling out are the head-to-head ones, because most people end up choosing between two.

There is a rough pattern to prices. A Chongli pass on a weekday, board included, usually lands between CNY 200 and 350, while weekends and public holidays run from CNY 400 to 600 or more. Single-day passes at Wanlong and Genting generally cost more than at Thaiwoo and Fulong. Every resort prices day passes by weekday, weekend, public holiday and time of day, and whether gear is included changes the number a lot, so line up the pass types before comparing figures.

Wanlong or Genting?

Both focus on intermediate and advanced terrain, but they feel different.

Wanlong is one of Chongli's earliest resorts. Its runs are designed for continuous skiing, with big drops and plenty of turns, which suits people who can hold a steady speed and lap all day. The overall difficulty is high, so beginners tend to feel tense, and it need not be your first choice for a maiden ski trip. When a group spans very different levels, Wanlong works best for the stronger skiers to ride on their own while the others pick a different resort.

Genting grades its terrain more completely. The advanced runs match Olympic courses, and the transitions between beginner and intermediate levels are clearer, which makes a mixed-ability family easier to organise. Some ride the advanced runs, some take lessons in the beginner area, and everyone meets at the same ski hall for lunch. Its weak point is lift queues in peak season, so on busy dates you need to start early to get a place.

In short, Wanlong suits groups of similar ability with a clear goal, and Genting suits mixed groups that need to accommodate different levels.

Thaiwoo or Fulong for a family with children?

Both are family-friendly, and the difference lies in the layout.

Thaiwoo is a complete resort town where hotels, restaurants, shops and the ski area run together, with runs from beginner to advanced and teaching concentrated in one place. Non-skiing family members can wander the town. Rooms are not cheap in peak season and get more expensive the closer you are to the slopes, so book one or two months ahead.

Fulong is closer to Chongli town and smaller than Thaiwoo, but snow-play areas and night skiing are its strengths, and after a day on the slopes you can still ride snow tubes or snowmobiles. Staying in town with children gives you more choice for meals and supplies at steadier prices. Its lessons and lodging are a notch below Thaiwoo, so the all-in-one resort experience is weaker.

The test is straightforward. If you want to stay inside the resort without moving around and are willing to pay more for it, choose Thaiwoo. If you would rather stay in town, drive in and out each day and handle meals and shopping in town, choose Fulong. There is also a case where neither fits: if your child is too young for lessons and can only play in the snow, build the trip around snow play instead of buying a pass out of habit.

Coming from Beijing: day trip or two nights?

A day trip works, but only for a taste, not for practice. The Beijing-Zhangjiakou high-speed line leaves from Beijing North or Qinghe and reaches Taizicheng in about an hour, with shuttle buses from the station to the resorts. By car on the Jingli expressway it is about three hours from central Beijing, and winter mountain sections need extra time. A day trip means you reach the slopes around midday and have to pack up by four or five in the afternoon, leaving less than half a day of actual skiing.

One night gives you two half days and suits a first taste or a trial run with children. To really work on technique, two nights is the minimum, with one full skiing day in the middle. Two nights have another benefit: take lessons in the beginner area on day one, move to harder terrain on day two, and ski a short final morning on day three before heading home.

One easy-to-miss point when booking. The resorts and the accommodation areas are separate: lodging near Taizicheng station is close to Genting and Thaiwoo, while Chongli town is close to Fulong. Book in the wrong area and the extra travel adds up every day. In peak season, secure lodging first and buy passes second; the other order tends to leave you with neither.

Pre-Departure Checklist

Confirm each of these before departure. Whether your dates fall after the opening date, and which runs and lifts are open that day. Whether night skiing is running and when it ends. Whether beginner lessons and instructors need booking, and whether they teach skiing or snowboarding. Whether the pass includes gear, a helmet, goggles and lockers. How often the shuttle runs from your lodging to the ski hall, and how the high-speed train times connect with the shuttle. Local weather and road-ice warnings.

The safety reminders are the same. Wear a helmet, and rent hip and knee pads while you are learning. Only ski runs that match your level, and do not follow others onto terrain beyond you. Confirm before departure that your insurance covers ski-related rescue and medical care. For how to rent gear and what slope etiquette looks like, the site's first-time skiing preparation guide goes into more detail. If you are new to skiing altogether, you can also start with where to ski in China guide, and compare Chongli with the Northeast and Xinjiang before deciding.

Data sources and review notes

The run counts, vertical drops, elevations, season dates and price ranges quoted above are compiled from publicly available run data for Chongli resorts, opening and closing records for the 2025-2026 season, and published ticketing information. The review date is 21 September 2026. Chongli resorts report run counts and drops differently from year to year, and prices move through the season, so the figures here are an order of magnitude rather than a quote. Opening and closing dates, open runs, lift operations, pass prices and discounts for the 2026-2027 season are subject to each resort's latest official announcement.

Pick the base area before you pick the resort

Choosing a Chongli resort comes down to two things: which area you sleep in, and whose pass you buy. If your level is modest and you are bringing family, Thaiwoo and Fulong keep shuttles, meals and lessons inside one area. If you can ski intermediate runs confidently, Wanlong and Genting are where you will get your money's worth. If you just want two relaxed days, Dolomiti and Changchengling are enough. The resorts are not far apart, but switching between them saves neither money nor time.

Once the itinerary is set, the remaining variables are weather and crowds. In peak season, weekend lift queues affect your day more than terrain difficulty does, and starting early beats spending more. One last word on price: Chongli passes and rooms move a lot in peak season and often double or more over Spring Festival, so avoid public holidays if you can. If you can only travel during them, book a month ahead to trade money for price and location. As for gear, renting at the resort on a first trip is fine, and you can put the budget into lessons instead.
