Tour overview
Understand the pace, service and fit before diving into the itinerary.
A Chaoshan pure-tourism short trip themed on food and culture: departing from Foshan, the first day enters the national historic city of Chaozhou to tour the riverside promenade, Guangji Gate Tower, Jiadi Lane heritage houses and the Memorial Arch Street, enjoying the two-bank illumination show and the Xiangzi Bridge light display at night; the second day heads to Nan'ao Island, one of Guangdong's most beautiful islands, driving across the Nan'ao sea bridge, checking in at Changshanwei Lighthouse and Qing'ao Bay Beach to feel the sea breeze and fishing-village charm; the last day strolls Shantou's Shipao Tai Park and the Little Park arcade complex to read the bustling past of the century-old trading port. The tour includes 4 main meals, 2 breakfasts and 4 snacks — 10 meals in all — with Chaoshan beef hotpot, oyster omelette and rice rolls in one go, an upgrade to a sea-view hotel on Nan'ao Island, a small boutique group with no shopping stops throughout — perfect for weekend leisure, food lovers and family travel.
Chaoshan is where Guangdong eats best — and where it keeps its traditions most fully. The phrase "gagia nang" (our own people) binds Chaoshan people scattered across the world; a bowl of beef balls draws countless diners from thousands of kilometres away. And the architecture — Paifang Street and Guangji Bridge in the Chaozhou old town, the arcades of Little Park in Shantou — tells the rise and fall of this century-old trading port. This three-day short line packs in the most worth-seeing and most worth-eating of Chaoshan: day one belongs to the Chaozhou old town — walk the ancient walls along the Han River's riverside promenade, eat your way from one end of Paifang Street to the other, and wait for night to fall as the lights on both banks and the light show on Guangji (Xiangzi) Bridge light up the old city; day two belongs to Nan'ao Island — the cross-sea bridge links this most beautiful island of Guangdong, where the crescent beach of Qing'ao Bay and the lighthouse at Changshanwei are superb photo spots; day three returns to Shantou, closing the journey with Shipaotai Fort and the arcades of Little Park.
The trip's name "Chaotan 10 Meals" is no exaggeration — 4 main meals, 2 breakfasts and 4 snacks, with satay beef hotpot, Chaoshan flavour banquets and a vegetarian feast in turn. Boarding at multiple stops across Foshan's five districts, air-conditioned coach round trip, with one night in a local Chaoshan hotel and one night on Nan'ao Island — pure touring with no shopping. For diners who want a weekend of Chaoshan flavour without arranging their own transport, this is a route that fits just right; the fare is quoted in adult, no-bed and child tiers, and the boarding points follow the pre-departure confirmation.
Who is this route for?
It suits family trips, groups of elders and weekend short escapes. The itinerary is sightseeing- and food-led with low physical demands, including an upgrade to a sea-view island hotel on Nan'ao; no shopping and pure touring make it right for travellers who dislike being led into shops. A reminder: registration is limited to travellers under 80; those aged 70–80 must be accompanied by at least one companion aged 18–69 and sign a liability waiver. If any companion has a seafood allergy or dietary restriction, state it at registration. One main meal on day two is self-arranged — perfect for leaving to a local Nan'ao seafood stall; and if someone in the group can't take raw seafood, Chaoshan's beef hotpot and kway teow snacks are plenty to eat well.
What should you prepare before departure?
Chaoshan food is mainly light and fresh; spicy options are available on request. Those with sensitive stomachs may bring their own medication.
Protect against the sun when playing on Nan'ao's beaches and consider bringing swimwear; Qing'ao Bay is an open beach with no lifeguards — do not swim in the sea.
There are many pick-up points in Foshan; please confirm the departure point and time in advance, as the coach will not wait.
Seniors over 70 must be accompanied by a companion and sign a liability waiver; please note in advance.
If the light show pauses for maintenance or force majeure, that's normal — plan the evening's expectations accordingly.
What's the easiest way to arrange the three days?
Day 1 — Foshan–Chaozhou: Enjoy a vegetarian buffet en route, then walk the ancient city walls along the riverside promenade on arrival, visiting the Guangji Gate tower, the old houses of Jiadi Lane and Stone Paifang Street; dinner is a Chaoshan flavour banquet, and by night watch the lights on both banks and the light show on Xiangzi Bridge. Stone Paifang Street is perfect for eating as you walk — leave room in the day-one appetite for day two's beef balls, oyster omelettes and rice rolls.
Day 2 — Chaozhou–Nan'ao: In the morning visit the Han Wengong Shrine (closed Mondays — the Thai Buddhist Hall is the substitute), in the afternoon ride across the Nan'ao cross-sea bridge, stop at the Changshanwei lighthouse, stroll the sands of Qing'ao Bay and view the wind-turbine hills and Nature's Gate from afar, with a signature local dinner in the evening. The island stay is all about the sea view — get up a little earlier the next morning for the sunrise if you like.
Day 3 — Shantou–Foshan: Visit Shipaotai Park and the arcade buildings of Little Park, the century-old trading port, and feel the Nanyang (Southeast Asian) ambience of the 1930s; after lunch, coach back to Foshan where the group ends. If you want souvenirs before returning, Shantou beef balls and aged preserved kumquat are common picks.
What's in the price, and what's extra?
The adult fare covers round-trip coach seats, meals and a bed (no-bed and child rates differ), including one night in a Chaozhou hotel, one night on Nan'ao Island, the full 10 meals (4 main, 2 breakfast, 4 snacks) and first-entry tickets to the listed sights. Not included: travel accident insurance, personal spending, and self-paid activities such as the Nan'ao boat cruise (about 118 yuan/person) and the old-town buggy (about 30 yuan/person). Fees and boarding-point policies follow the confirmation at booking; meals are team-catered and non-refundable if unused. A special note: there are several boarding points across Foshan's five districts — pickup starts from 2 people, fixed-point boarding applies from 8+, and a shortfall may add an 80 yuan/person transfer fee; solo travellers may need to make up a 180 yuan single-room supplement — best to ask the advisor for all these details at once when booking.
Closing words: Chaoshan holds both your stomach and your heart
Three days isn't long, yet enough for Chaoshan to leave a vivid mark on you. The beef balls are still tumbling on Paifang Street, the light show still flows over the Han River, the sea breeze of Nan'ao still tastes of salt, and the arcades of Little Park still catch the glow of old times. What you take away, besides a belly full of food, is the unhurried, exacting character unique to this thousand-year trading port. As Chaoshan people say, "Eat in Guangzhou, but taste in Chaoshan." As you savour the aroma of satay beef on the coach home, you'll understand the weight of that saying.
The best of Chaoshan can't be finished in three days — so keep this trip in memory and come back slowly next time. If you happen to have a weekend gap and want to skip arranging your own coach and queues, tell a 0765trip travel advisor your departure group size and boarding district, and we'll confirm departures, boarding points and the cost details for you. Before you leave, recheck the day's assembly time, Nan'ao weather and the beach management notices at Qing'ao Bay — island weather changes fast, and some sea activities pause when waves pick up; safety always comes first, and everything follows the confirmation at travel.
