Tour overview
Understand the pace, service and fit before diving into the itinerary.
A classic loop covering Ningxia's highlights: revisit scenes from A Chinese Odyssey at Zhenbeibu Film Studio, touch ten-thousand-year-old human marks at the Helan Mountain rock art, explore the Western Xia Tombs, the "Oriental Pyramids", go deep into Tonghu Grassland at the edge of the Tengger Desert, and watch the Yellow River meet the desert at Shapotou. The itinerary also visits the Goji Berry Museum for 4,000 years of goji culture, watches the Helan sunset from the Roman-style theatre at Lanshan Park, and samples Northwest snacks at Huaiyuan Night Market. Four nights in 3-star hotels, comfortable coaches, Northwest specialities including copper-pot lamb hotpot, direct return flights from Guangzhou, and an easy, well-paced schedule. Visitors aged 60+ get free first-admission tickets. Purely sightseeing — no forced shopping, no forced extras. Ideal for families, seniors and culture lovers.
Ningxia is a land sheltered by both the Yellow River and the Helan Mountains: half is the fragrant rice and fat fish of a "Jiangnan beyond the Great Wall", half is the lonely smoke and vast desert of the northwest. From the bonfires of the Shuidonggou people 30,000 years ago to Xingqingfu, capital of the Western Xia dynasty, this land carries a weighty history and grows a vivid everyday life. This five-day route strings together Ningxia's most representative scenery in one trip: in the Zhenbeibu film studio, the rammed-earth towers and Moon Gate pull you into the frames of A Chinese Odyssey; the sun-god figure in the Helan Mountain rock art has watched over a nomadic civilisation for ten thousand years; and the earthen mausoleum towers of the Western Xia tombs stretch beneath the Helan Mountains — called the "Oriental Pyramids", they still hold countless unsolved mysteries.
The journey is more than ancient sites. Tonghu Grassland kneads desert, oasis and lake into one picture, while Shapotou lets you stand above the Yellow River and watch the desert rush past. When night falls, the clamour of Huaiyuan Night Market and the sunset glow over Lanshan Park add a uniquely northwestern romance to the trip. The whole route runs on direct return flights from Guangzhou, four nights in net-rated three-diamond hotels (three in Yinchuan, one in Zhongwei), a comfortable coach with one seat per person, signature northwest meals including copper-pot lamb hotpot, and a reasonably arranged driving schedule; visitors over 60 are exempt from first-entry scenic tickets — suited to first-time northwest families travelling with elders.
Who is this route for?
It suits first-time visitors to the northwest who want to see the best of Ningxia in five days, and families travelling with parents — four nights in three-diamond hotels throughout, driving long but easy-paced, and free first-entry scenic tickets for those over 60. Film, history and folk-culture lovers will have an especially good time: from the A Chinese Odyssey location to the imperial tombs of the Western Xia, there's a story to tell at every stop. A reminder: Ningxia's sun is intense and its day–night temperature swings are big; travellers over 75 or with limited mobility are not recommended to join. In Hui-majority areas, respect local dietary and religious customs.
What should you note before departure?
Northwest UV is intense — be sure to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, a UV-protective layer, scarf and hat.
Big day-night temperature swings — even in summer, bring a light jacket for mornings and evenings.
Drives between sights are long — pack motion-sickness tablets, drink plenty of water and rest well.
Respect Hui customs and taboos: pork, horse and mule — the meat of non-ruminant animals — are not eaten; in mosques, no smoking, no drinking and no photography.
Never act alone on desert activities; sit naturally with the camel's gait when riding, and always wear a life jacket on the sheepskin raft.
How the five days unfold: from the film studio to the desert and the Yellow River
Day 1 — Guangzhou–Yinchuan: Private-car airport pickup and check-in; in the evening you can wander Xinhua Street and the Drum Tower area and try the Yingbinlou lamb hotpot.
Day 2 — Zhenbeibu and the Helan Mountain rock art: In the morning wander the Zhenbeibu Western China Film Studio and revisit classic film scenes; in the afternoon see the Helan Mountain rock art, and in the evening browse Huaiyuan Night Market.
Day 3 — Western Xia tombs and Tonghu Grassland: Explore the "Oriental Pyramids" of the Western Xia tombs; in the afternoon go deep into the Tonghu Grassland at the edge of the Tengger Desert to see the desert oasis. Overnight in Zhongwei.
Day 4 — Shapotou and the Yinchuan finale: Play at Shapotou in the morning (sand-sledding, sheepskin-raft drifting and more are self-paid); lunch upgrades to copper-pot lamb hotpot; in the afternoon visit the goji-berry museum, and at dusk watch the sun set behind the Helan Mountains at Lanshan Park.
Day 5 — Yinchuan–Guangzhou: Transfer to the airport according to flight time after breakfast and head home.
A few practical reminders: Zhenbeibu is all about rammed-earth architecture and film scenes — ask for a guide or brush up on a few classic films beforehand to feel more immersed; the Helan rock art and Western Xia tombs are both outdoors, best in the morning when the light is good and the crowds thin, so place them early in the itinerary; at Shapotou, choose sand-sledding, sheepskin rafts and the like on site by personal interest — no need to lock them in advance. Travelling with children, the film studio and Shapotou are the easiest to enjoy; slow the pace on the heritage stops and weave in a few history stories.
What's included in the cost, and what's extra?
Included: return economy flights between Guangzhou and Yinchuan, four nights in three-diamond hotels, first-entry tickets to the listed scenic areas, 4 breakfasts and 3 main meals (including copper-pot lamb hotpot) and certified Mandarin-speaking guide service. Not included: construction and fuel fees, travel accident insurance, the ticket difference for those under 60 (about 200 yuan/person), paid recreation at the scenic areas and personal spending — budget about 500–900 yuan. Ningxia's sights are scattered and drives are long — an objective fact — so the itinerary tries to put the long drives in the mornings; scenic opening times and flight schedules follow confirmation at the time of travel.
Closing words: where lone desert smoke meets a Jiangnan beyond the Great Wall
After five days in Ningxia, the most memorable thing isn't any single landmark but this land's "contrast" — in the morning you're still picturing the Knight of A Chinese Odyssey atop Zhenbeibu's rammed-earth walls, at noon you're standing at Shapotou watching the Yellow River's nine bends; in the evening you wait for a sunset beneath the Helan Mountains at Lanshan Park, and by night the warmth of Huaiyuan Night Market pulls you back to human life. Sometimes the point of travel is simply to witness with your own eyes the pictures that only ever existed in your imagination.
Ningxia is small, yet big enough to concentrate history, desert, oasis and food into one just-right journey. For first-time northwest travellers, this route strings "film sets, heritage, desert and lamb" into a few easy, unhurried days — an ideal first stop in the northwest: world-class film and history resources, plus outdoor experiences where river and desert interweave, with fun for elders and children alike. To walk this frontier loop yourself, or to confirm the direct flights, the over-60 free-ticket policy and that season's paid items, tell a 0765trip travel advisor your travel time and group size. Ningxia's peak season and scenic-area opening times adjust each year — before leaving, recheck flight schedules and ticket policies, subject to the latest official announcements. Set off in a good mood: the Jiangnan beyond the Great Wall and the lone desert smoke are both waiting for you on the itinerary.
